Donald James Veater, 84, of South Abington Twp., died Saturday evening at home. His wife is the former Betty Richards. The couple had been married for 61 years.
Born in Continental 3, Fayette County, he was the son of the late Martin S. and Violet Veater. He attended Georges Township High School in York Run, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the football team and played on the all-county football team.
Don graduated from Penn State University with a degree in ceramic technology. While there, he was proud to have been freshman dorm president, and an usher at the PSU football games.
He was a proud Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed working with young people, and served as a Boy Scout Committee member for Troop 160. He was a coach, umpire and a referee with the Abington youth basketball and baseball leagues. He was a member of the Church of Saint Gregory, Clarks Green where he was an usher for over 40 years.
Before retirement, he was a Production Engineer for American Capacitor Corp. and Automation Components Inc. He helped with the U.S. Census in 1990, and most recently worked at All American Self Storage in Scranton.
Surviving are children, Jacqueline and husband, Gary Spector, Seattle, Wash.; Donald (Greg) and wife, Donna, Clarks Summit; Sharon, Mt. Joy; Susan, Scranton; John and wife, Nathalie, York; Anthony, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Eric and wife, Denise, Ashville, N.C.; two brothers, Martin and wife, Gale, St. Simon's Island, Ga.; and William and wife, Carol, Hanover; a sister, Patricia Furbee, Pittsburgh; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Francis M. Veater; a grandson, Dennis James Veater; and great-granddaughters, Everleigh and Hadleigh Veater.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. from the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, with services by the Rev. John Lapera, pastor. Interment will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Scott Twp.
Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
