Listen to Obituary

Don Race of Waverly died Sunday May 16 th after a short battle with cancer.  He was 75.

He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend.

Don grew up milking cows on his grandfather's farm.  Upon graduation from Scott High School (Lakeland), he attended Keystone (Junior) College.  He then was offered a job by Union Carbide Co. to work in the lab doing drug research. While working in New York, he completed his college degree in Middletown. After his division at Union Carbide was sold, he returned home and worked for Pharmakon Labs and the Abington Journal. He opened a book store in Clarks Summit, and published two books of poetry.  He then worked in construction, first with his friend Dale VanFleet, then went into business for himself.  D.J. Race Construction built several outstanding homes, as well as the Dalton Library, for which he received the Distinguished Builders Award. In the late 1970's and early 1980's, he and his wife Liz decided to focus on an equestrian center, which had always been her dream. Don took care of the farm, mowing hay, etc.

He is survived by his wife Liz; sister Barb; daughters Heather, Cady, and Trudy; son Derek; and his nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter Lisa.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
