Catherine Janichko, 96, of Waverly Twp., passed away Saturday at Guardian Health Care and Rehab. She was the wife of Joseph Janichko, whom she was married to since 1947.
Born in Scranton, she was the only child of Edward & Catherine Schimelfenig growing up in the Keyser Valley section of Scranton. Catherine worked at a dress factory but mostly she was known to the community by her involvement with the Fireman's Federation, a member of AACA, she was a member of Northeast Fireman's Federation & judged parades as well as Past president of its Auxiliary, she helped found the Anthracite Museum, being a past president of the Allied Services Volunteers and Dalton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a lifetime member of the Dalton, Scott and Chinchilla fire companies. She owned Dalton Fire Company's first fire engine which was a 1927 Buffalo, the first fire truck to use water for fire suppression. Catherine volunteered for the Waverly Community House and was an election team member. She loved her lighthouses and was a master quilter.
She is survived by her niece Mary A. Karcheski Jack Shandrey.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
Interment will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, Dalton Fire Company, the Anthracite Museum or Allied Services.
