Catherine J. Hammerman, died Monday at Clarks Summit Senior Living. Her husband was the late Willard Hammerman.
She was the daughter of the late John T. and Dorothy Ann Evans Jones. A Scranton native, she spent most of her senior years in the Abington area. She was a graduate of Keystone Junior College, Bucknell University and Smith College where she received her Masters Degree. Her primary interest was in counseling and social work. Prior to retirement she was Director of Professional Services at Family Service of Lackawanna County.
Catherine was a friend to many who can tell of her love and devotion in times of happiness and sadness, or when they needed her support. Her concern often extended long beyond the call of duty.
She was a member of the Century Club, the St. David's Society and the United Baptist Church of Scranton where she taught Sunday School for many years and served as a Life Deacon. Having a great love for her Welsh heritage, she shared a recording of her father's beautiful tenor voice and love of music with all her relatives and friends and eagerly participated when Welsh choirs visited Scranton. She also made a great contribution in her retirement years when she taught the game of Bridge to many local groups at schools and community centers. Her keen sense of humor endeared her to everyone she knew.
Surviving is a son, Dr. W. Jeffrey Hammerman, Taos, NM; two grandsons, H. Jeremy Hammerman and Brian Kehoe; two granddaughters, Meredith Gengo and Kathy Kehoe, four great grandchildren; two nephews and many nieces.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy (Dee) Kehoe; a brother, Dr. C. Henry Jones; and a sister Dorothy J. White.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the caring staff of Clarks Summit Senior Living; to Eileen Rich and Judy Lieber who have given Kay unbounded loving and compassionate care; to Diane Brown, her devoted neighbor and Dr. Eric Smith and the staff of Compassus Hospice.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1:30 PM from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home & Cremation Svc., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA with services by Rev. Earl O. Cassel.
