Boyd Irwin Holgate, 82, passed away quietly at his home in Dalton on the morning of April 1, 2018. His wife of 60 years is the former Mary Jane Zrowka.
Born in Clarks Summit, he was the son of the late Allen E. and Marion Johnson Holgate. After graduating from Clarks Summit High School he was a sales specialist for numerous years. Prior to retirement in 2008, he owned and operated Holgate Sporting Goods and AVAC appliance repair business in Clarks Summit. He was a member of Waverly Masonic Lodge F & A M, No. 301, Past President of the Factoryville Sportsmen's Club, and a member of the NRA.
Boyd was an avid outdoorsman who truly loved time spent with family and friends in the outdoors. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, beekeeping, and country music, especially bluegrass. He earned his pilot's license in 1977 and spent many years flying the skies of Northeastern PA with his beloved Bichon, Zoe. Boyd was a self taught guitar player and he cherished the many friendships he developed playing with the Airport Pickers Group as they traveled the area playing bluegrass music.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are two sons, Larry Holgate and his wife Jane, Nicholson, and Kevin Holgate, Hop Bottom; granddaughters, Heidi Tabaszewski and her husband Albert, CT and Holly Colvin and her husband Jim, Factoryville; great grandchildren, Luke, Maddy and Peyton; a brother Douglas Holgate; brother in law, George Carpenter; his faithful companion, Zoe; numerous nieces, nephews , loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hayden, Willard, Harper, Clifford, Keith and sisters, Frances Sutton, Irma Anderson and Delores Carpenter.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 pm from the Dalton United Methodist Church, 125 S. Turnpike Rd., Dalton with services by T.J. McCabe, pastor. Masonic services will be held at the church. Interment will follow in Miller Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pennsylvania Beekeepers Assn., c/o Bob Tatro, 100 Holly Hill Drive, Oakdale, PA 15071.
