Bonnie Sherman, 69, of Newton Township, passed away at home on Tuesday morning. She was the wife of Emmett Sherman, Sr. The couple had been married 50 years.
Born in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late John and Doris Wesolowski. She was a graduate of Abington Heights High School. Prior to retirement she worked at Our Lady of Peace School as the fiscal manager and served as the Newton Township tax collector for over 30 years. Bonnie, along with her husband, were also the owners of The Village Eatery and Sherm's Coffeehouse.
Bonnie was committed to her volunteer work. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Snows/Church of St. Benedict Parish and Cursillo. She spent many summers cooking for the annual bazaar. She also served as a Eucharist Minister and President of the Women's Guild for many years. She was a member of the Newton-Ransom Volunteer Fire Company and its Ladies Auxiliary, as well as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post #7069.
Also surviving are her children: Emmett Jr. (fiancé Barbara), Liverpool, NY and Deb (wife Amy), Newton; siblings Dolores, Bel-Air, MD, John Jr. (wife Janet), Queenstown, MD, Nancy (husband Bert), Newton, and Lenny, Clarks Summit; grandchildren Alivia, Ava, and Patrick Sherman, Jessup; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and a great nephew.
She was preceded in death by her sister Linda, brother Daniel, mother-in-law Cynthia Palmiter, father-in-law Glendon Sherman, sister-in-law Mary Jo Wesolowski, brother-in-law William Floyd, sister-in-law Rose Schultheis, and nephews Stephen Wesolowski and Randy Tetlock.
The family would like to thank her compassionate nurses and aides at Allied Services Hospice, especially Jonathan and Kristen. They would also like to express their appreciation for all those who visited and were so supportive during this difficult time.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn, pastor, on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Benedict, 1849 Newton-Ransom Blvd., PA 18411. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit. The family will also have a celebration of Bonnie's life at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Allied Services Hospice Center, 511 Morgan Highway, Scranton, PA 18508.
