Bernard W. " Bernie" Berkoski, 69, of Newton Twp., passed away peacefully Monday afternoon at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, surrounded by his family. His wife is the former Joan Pawlikowski. The couple has been married for over 46 wonderful years.
Born in Duryea, son of the late Edward and Sophie Rushkowski Berkoski. He was a graduate of Abington Heights High School and worked for over forty years as a grocery manager for Giant Markets. Prior to his retirement he was employed at Gerrity's Market.
" Bernie " , as he was known to all, was a beloved, brave and loyal husband, father, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters, and his grandson, who was the light of his life. He dearly loved them all.
His hobbies included gardening , science fiction movies, casinos, and spending time on his computer. Although he had to undergo kidney dialysis three times a week, he never complained about his many debilitating conditions, and still lived his life to the fullest extent. Many people will miss his sarcastic wit, dry humor, kindness, and compassion.
Surviving are his two daughters: Lisa, of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Pamela Del Vecchio and her husband Tom of Clarks Summit, his beloved grandson, Tommy, two brothers Walter, Pittsburgh; and Andrew, Clarks Summit, a sister Frances Fisher, El Paso TX., his dear sister-in-law Rosemary Schiavi, his niece Christine Verdetto and great-niece Capria, his godson John Litwinski, and his sons John, Adam, and Ryan, who where his grandchildren of the heart; their mother Marisa Litwinski, Clarks Summit; one nephew, 5 nieces, and his beloved rat terrier and constant companion, Jilly.
A funeral will be held Thursday morning from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10am from Our lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St. , Clarks Summit, to be celebrated by Msgr James McGarry, Pastor. Interment in Abington Hills Cemetery, S. Abington Twp.
Friends may call today from 5pm to 8pm at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moses Taylor Dialysis Patient Fund, c/o Marilee Manganiello, 700 Quincy Ave. Scranton, PA 18510.
