Amelia C. Dohanich, R.N., 84, died Wednesday in New Orleans of cancer. A resident of Fleetville, Amelia was the wife of Peter Dohanich. The couple had been married for 62 years.
She was born in Throop, the daughter of the late Frank and Amelia Mason Gallo. She was a graduate of Benton Twp. High School and the Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing. A registered nurse, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from College Misericordia and her Master of Science degree in counselor education from the University of Scranton. Amelia was employed as a staff nurse and a head nurse at Scranton State General Hospital from 1951 to 1964 and served as instructor of nursing from 1964 to 1984. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, the Pennsylvania Nurses Association, the Scranton State General Hospital Alumni Association, College Misericordia Alumni Association, University of Scranton Alumni Association and the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees. Amelia was a lifelong member of Corpus Christi Church in Mondale.
She is also survived by a son, Gary Peter Dohanich, Ph.D., and partner, Stacy Overstreet, Ph.D., New Orleans; three sisters, June and husband, Richard McGarity, Fort Myers, Fla.; Shirley and husband, Ronald Kirlin, Baylors Lake; and Lucille Matalavy, Point Pleasant, N.J.; three brothers, John and wife, Muriel Gallo, Fleetville; Frank and wife, Mary Gallo, Peckville; and Gerald and wife, Sharon Gallo, Peckville; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Gallo; and three sisters, Frances Gallo, Joan Perry and Rosemary Jakubos.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Corpus Christi Church, to be celebrated by the Rev. William J. Flynn. The family will receive friends from 9 until time of the Mass at the church.
Entombment will be in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
