Alex G. Mitchell, 80, of Lake Winola, died Saturday afternoon at the VNA Hospice Unit in Geisinger Community Medical Hospital in Scranton. He was the husband of Margaret "Peggy" Smith Mitchell. The couple had been married for 56 years.
Born in West Pittston, he was the son of the late Jean M. Mitchell. He was a 1954 graduate of West Pittston High School. Alex went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He then furthered his education by receiving an Associates Degree in Civil Engineering from Wilkes University, a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics from Franklin and Marshall, and his Masters Degree in Business administration from Penn State University. Alex was employed by various banking institutions and prior to his retirement was employed by the Bank of America. He was of the Methodist faith.
Alex was a member of the Factoryville Sportsman's Club and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially sport fishing on Lake Ontario.
Also surviving is a daughter Karen Cronan, and her husband Michael, Fogelsville,PA; a sister Carol Craig and husband Lou, Binghamton NY; a grandson Richard Stine, Bethlehem,PA; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at noon from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit Pa. 18411, with Services by Rev. Ruth Liples, Pastor of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Harding. Interment will follow with full military honors in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Harding.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10 am until time of service at the funeral home.
